UCSB Latin American and Iberian Studies Program

Available Fellowships for LAIS Graduate Affiliates!

The Program in Latin American and Iberian Studies (LAIS) invites applications for its Graduate Alumni Research Award for Summer 2024. These awards support innovative scholarship in Latin American and Iberian Studies by providing small research stipends of $500 for LAIS graduate students and LAIS graduate affiliates.

Applicants must be LAIS graduate students or LAIS graduate affiliates enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program at UCSB, and focusing on Latin America and/or Iberia in their research. To become a LAIS graduate affiliate, learn more about our graduate affiliate initiative here.

The research stipend can be applied to support travel to conduct research; presenting or participating in conferences, whether virtually or in person; working in libraries, archives, museums; conducting ethnographic fieldwork or oral histories; purchasing necessary research materials or equipment; or other research related expenses. We hope that these funds can be combined with funding from other sources and make a meaningful contribution to your work.

The activities must be undertaken between June and September 22nd, 2024 (the start of Fall 2024). Priority will be given to graduate students at the beginning of their studies, and to those who have not received funding from the LAIS Program in the past.

Please note that students who receive a LAIS Graduate Alumni Research Award will be expected to provide a brief report in Fall 2024 on what they were able to do with the funding, whether in writing or in person during a LAIS event.
